Computer Help

For many people, computers seem to simply not work at certain times and then work at others. Here are some simple tips and support techniques that may help those times when your computer simply doesn't seem to work happen less often.

Security and Virus Protection
    In order to insure your computer is secure from viruses and spyware, you should try to follow these general tips.

    There are some programs available within the downloads section which are often used and suggested for students in order to protect their computers from viruses and spyware for personal use that are free as well. Our downloads section can be reached by clicking here.

    Install anti-virus (McAfee, Norton, are paid subscriptions. Microsoft Security Essentials, it's free.)

    Make sure all Windows Updates are installed

    Set string passwords for ALL accounts.

    Only share files on networks you trust

    Only install applications you need

    Only install applications that come form a trustworthy source.

    If possible, use multiple browsers like Firefox.

    Erase all the info off your computer before tossing it.
Good Computing Practices
  • There are certain tricks and utilities that can be useful in order to insure that you get the most out of your machine and keep it running smoothly and efficiently. Here are just a few examples:

    Run disk cleanup to remove unneeded files.

    Run disk defragmenter to store and access files quicker.

    Make sure to backup all the important files on a separate hard drive or computer.

    Enable and create system restore points to revert back to in case of a failure.

    Always shutdown your computer in the proper manner or it may corrupt important system files.

    Only install applications that you trust to your machine and that come from a trustworthy source.
